Musician’s Corner at Centennial Park

5 Nov

It hurts, and it’s sad, but there comes a time when we have to say goodbye to something great – at least until next spring. Yes, this is the last week for Musicians Corner in 2011. Oh, how we’ll miss killing 3 hours on Nashville’s most beautiful Saturdays in Centennial Park, listening to great music, eating food from food trucks, looking at adorable dogs, and meeting new people.

The good news is, this week Musicians Corner has a lineup that’s even more excellent than usual. It’s presented by our friends at Lightning 100 and their Local Lightning Spotlight and will feature Madi Diaz, Holly Maher, Jessica Campbell, The Vespers, Painted Desert, and more. I highly recommend Madi Diaz. I saw her at Soundland and she was fantastic.

As always, the event runs from 3-6pm in Centennial Park and there will be fun stuff for your kids to do, food trucks, a dog of the day contest, and more. C’mon guys, they weather is going to be great for it. It’s going to be in the 60s and sunny today. And while we don’t know how many more nice weekends like this we’ll have we do know that this is the last weekend for the rest of the year that we’ll be able to spend it with Musicians Corner, so come on out and show your support to this excellent organization.

Americana Festival – the Free Stuff

13 Oct

Did you hear about the Americana Festival? It’s a big year for them because it’s the first year Oxford has recognized the word Americana as a really one. Suck it, spell check, I’ve been right all along!

Well, the festival started last night, and so far it’s off to a pretty great start. The swag bags are legit, the music is awesome, and at $50 for a four-day pass it’s pretty damn affordable for what you get. But I have good news for those of you who couldn’t quite make the commitment to shell out $50 for the best music genre. You see, there are some official and not-so-official Americana events happening this week, so you can still get your fix of that catch-all genre you love so much.

Let’s start with Grimey’s. This Saturday from 10am-8pm Grimey’s is mashing their fall outdoor sale and their annual Americanarama into one day of cheap records and CDs and excellent live Americana. Performers include our good friend Paul Burch, Hymn for Her, Glossary, Shivering Timbers, and more. There will even be some sweet DJ sets including one by the Record Wranglers. So bring your cash money (for the records!) and brave the crowds at Grimey’s for a few hours this Saturday. Oh, and Mas Tacos and Yazoo will be there, so you know it’s a party.

Next up is Musician’s Corner. As previously mentioned in the Weekly Highlights this week’s show is Americana-flavored and will feature sets from Brian Wright (who I highly recommend), Nanci Griffith, Ben Sollee, Peter Cooper, Eric Brace, and Jim Lauderdale. There will also be a tribute to the great Tom T. Hall with Peter Cooper. As always there will be vendors, food truck, etc. As always it’s in Centennial Park from 3-6pm.

Finally we shall talk about the Thirty Tigers party at the Hard Rock Cafe Saturday from 5-8pm. No AMA badge is necessary for this either, even though it’s the most official (I guess) of these events. Performers will include Amy Speace, Nikki Lane, Garland Jeffreys, Rual Malo, and Chuck Mead. There may be food. I hope there will be food. They Thirty Tigers, please make sure there is food.

That’s one full day of Americana, but if you want to hit up any of the other shows it’s sure to be a good time. It’s $15 for single shows except at the Mercy Lounge/Cannery where it’s $20 (but you get into both venues).

Musicians Corner: A Day in Pictures

20 May

You don’t need to hear me blab about how much I love Musicians Corner. A few friends and I went down on May 7th to catch a few acts, and our friend Katie Chow took some sweet pics of Andrew Ripp (with special guest Dave Barnes), Sarah Buxton, and everyone’s favorite ever-dancing fellow, Rico!

The First Musicians Corner of the Year

6 May

Musicians Corner is set to make its triumphant return this Saturday May 7th at Centennial Park from 3-6pm. You might have been to Musicians Corner last year, and hopefully you remember it being a lot of fun.Well, apparently the folks at Musicians Corner aren’t ones to settle, because they’re set to make this Musicians Corner the best one ever.

As usual they have a pretty solid lineup of performers. Sarah Buxton, Andrew Ripp, The Westbound Rangers, Dara Tucker & Marie Hines will all be a-strummin’ and a-singin’ for your listening pleasure. There will also be what promises to be more vendors than ever, including (hopefully) a few of Nashville’s many food trucks. Ben & Jerry’s will be there with free ice cream samples, you’ll be able to enter to win a Gibson guitar, Generation Domination Photo Booth will be there with free photos, Cool People Care will be handing out green tips, and there will be plenty of fun activities for the children.

Also new this year is a dog of the day contest, so please bring your furry friends. Your pooch could be famous!

I hope the weather holds up for Musicians Corner and I hope to see you there! Make sure you follow them on Twitter to make sure you’re up-to-date on any changes that might happen because of the weather.

Musicians Corner: the Next Big Nashville Edition

2 Oct

Just like every Saturday for the past few months, Musicians Corner is today, and just like everything else that’s happening this week, it’s the Next Big Nashville edition of it.

As always, there will be vendors and great music, and since the Celebration of Cultures Festival is also happening today Centennial Park seems like the place to be.

Also, the weather is just amazing.

The lineup includes:

  • Yaza
  • Kopecky Family Band (who killed it at the Mercy Lounge last night)
  • Trent Dabbs
  • New Whole Usuals
  • Surprise guest

Whoa, hold on there for a second, that last picture is very familiar.

A weird black mask has been photoshopped over his eyes, so it’s kind of hard to tell…

Oh wait, yeah, holy shit, that’s Vince freaking Gill!!!!!

Well, it would seem that Vince Gill will be the surprise guest at Musicians Corner today.

Um, that’s pretty amazing. Have fun guys, and get there early to see Kopecky. Things get started at 3pm and will finish up around 6pm.

Musicians Corner: The Inaugural Event

10 Jul

A little stage, about 8 booths, and a few hundred people made up today’s first Musicians Corner. Despite weather that wasn’t exactly bad, but certainly wasn’t good, quite a few people showed up. Unsure of how enjoyable going to a park on a rainy day would be, I ended up going about an hour or so after it started.

When I got there two things surprised me: the decent turnout and the weirdly small number of vendors. I’m not surprised that the event could draw a crowd, don’t get me wrong, but the weather sucked. Everyone who went out was a brave soul, and I salute your enthusiasm. The few vendors was utterly shocking to me, though. There was a booth giving away free vitamin water (yay!), the Pied Piper (great ice cream), Green Wagon, a booth with cool cards (I’ve forgotten the name), a merch booth, snow cones, and a place selling ice cream. Oh yeah, and a dude with hot dogs.

I really thought that a big part of this event was going to be the vendors. I was expecting different food establishments to be there with, you know, real food other than ice cream. Maybe some Mas Tacos, I don’t know, something warm and appealing. Not fair food. If I had been there for the whole 3 hours I’m sure I would’ve headed over to Hog Heaven to get some BBQ, which is great for Hog Heaven, but I was expecting a little more from the festival. I understand that it’s the first week and they’re still finding their place, and who knows, maybe some people canceled because of the rain. That’s a reasonable assumption. I enjoyed what was there, but I was a little underwhelmed.

As for the music, what I heard I found enjoyable. I came in during the end of Mikky Ekko‘s set, and I really liked him. He has a good voice and I thought his songs were pretty solid. Bravo, Mikky Ekko, I’m sold. I was a little surprised to see people on stage holding umbrellas over the performers. Very P. Diddy. I guess the roof tarp over the stage was really meant more for keeping out light than rain. Next Mindy Smith, who got rained out a little earlier came on to finish her set. She was nice, but she kept forgetting the words to one of her songs. I always feel awkward when musicians do that. I mean, I’ve forgotten words to my songs before, but she forgot words twice during one. Other than that she was good. Nice, chill music for a kind of wet, spring-like day.

Sam & Ruby followed Mindy Smith and played their little set. The music was good, but again it was very relaxed. The most exciting part of the set was when a huge clap of thunder interrupted one of their songs. Well, I can hardly say it interrupted a song; I don’t think they skipped a beat.

Halfway through Sam & Ruby’s set I was ready for some energy to be brought by Charles Walker and the Dynamites. They’re the reason I braved the weather. I have been wanting to see them for so long, but it seems like I’m always either out of town or broke when they play in Nashville. There are days when a white girl needs some soul music in her life, and today was the day for this white girl. You can then imagine how broken hearted I felt when a man came on the stage and called it. There was a pretty steady stream of rain at this point and I completely understood, but man, I’m starting to feel like I’m not meant to see the Dynamites.

I really think that Musicians Corner has a lot of promise. There are still a few kinks to work out, like adding vendors and maybe choosing lineups that are more a mix of uptempo and downtempo, maybe add more rock and soul with that folksy indie stuff (and this coming from a person who is a folksy indie songwriter).

Musicians Corner at Centennial Park

7 Jul

One thing I love about Nashville is all the great events we have outside, especially during the summer. Tango, Big Band Dances, movies, concerts, we have great parks and great parking lots, and we like to use them!

I’ve briefly mentioned that this was coming, but I haven’t given very many details about it. It’s called Musicians Corner and it’s going to be held every Saturday afternoon starting this Saturday, June 10th.

The idea behind this event is to bring Nashville closer together through music. There will be performances by great artists, vendors, and cool people all around. There are still a lot of holes in the exact details for what we have in store, so maybe you’ll just have to go to find out what it’s all about it. The event is always slated to run from 3-6pm in Centennial Park.

This week’s artists look pretty good to me. Mayor Karl Dean will be there to kick it off, and the musicians include:

  • Sam & Ruby
  • Mikky Ekko
  • Damien Horne
  • Mindy Smith
  • Charles Walker & The Dynamites

Like I said, other than the music I don’t know exactly what all is going on for the first Musicians Corner, but the music is reason enough to get out and enjoy Nashville in the summer.

I’ll see you there!
