Scene Report: Better Trivia

11 Jan

There are quite a few different trivia nights in Nashville, and everyone has a favorite. What you may not know, however, is that a lot of these trivia events are hosted by the same company at different bars. To the best of my knowledge the big three are Trivia Time, Geeks Who Drink, and Better Trivia. All of these companies run the trivia at several different bars in Nashville. If you’ve been to a trivia night in the past year, chances are one of them ran it.

I’ve been to trivia hosted by all of them (my trivia nerdom started with Academic Team in high school), and while I think I prefer Geeks Who Drink my friends and I are far more likely to hit up a game by Better Trivia. The games are shorter than Geeks Who Drink (while you still get in a lot of questions) and there’s one in closer proximity to some of us, so there ya go.

The questions are usually pretty good, minus the always excruciating final wager. There are tons of opportunities to win free beer via an “impossible question” where the best you’ll ever be able to do is offer up an educated guess, and if you win the whole shebang you’ll get a $30 gift card. Second place gets $20, third gets $10. Just make sure you keep track of your points, because I’ve caught them on a few mistakes.

Last night, for the first time ever, our team actually won. We surprisingly won by a lot, too. Thanks in a large part to one member’s love of rap and the fact that I for some weird reason know that Neil Diamond used to fence at NYU. Oh yeah, and if you ever plan on attending make sure you follow them on Facebook because they always give a pretty big clue to one of their questions, and since most games are won by a matter of a few points you should really take what you can get.

Better Trivia is held on Tuesdays at 7:30pm at the following locations:
Cross Corner in Brentwood
Sportsman’s Grille in Hillsboro Village (upstairs)

Bob Dylan Birthday Bash at Grimey’s

24 May

Happy 70th birthday to Mr. Bob Dylan. That’s right, the folk/rock/gospel troubadour is entering a new decade of his life and wouldn’t you know it, Grimey’s wants to have a party for him!

Obviously, Dylan won’t be there, but the Record Wranglers will! They’ll be spinning some “rare and interesting” Dylan tracks, including some sweet covers. 11 in total, I think, but who knows, there might be more.

But wait, there’s more! One lucky attendee will walk away with a Dylan prize pack at the end of the night. Lots and lots of Dylan vinyl for free, and it might be yours, all you have to do is show up. Another thing you’ll get for just showing up? Free beer, but only if you’re 21+, of course.

Everything gets started at Grimey’s at 6pm tonight.

Free Budweiser TONIGHT

30 Sep

So, one of my faithful followers send me an email yesterday telling me where free Budweiser could be found yesterday and tomorrow. Sadly, I was way too involved with un-fun stuff to get to it, but there’s still free beer to be had TODAY! There will be a group of people in Midtown, here’s the list of bars they’re going to hit up between 4:30 (really?) and 7:30pm:

  • Broadway Brewhouse
  • Corner Pub (Midtown)
  • Rebar
  • Losers

So there you have it. Big thanks to our awesome follower Shane! You rock dude!

Budweiser for Free if You Know Where to Find it

27 Sep

In order to battle the irony of being a foreign-owned “American” brewer, Anheuser-Busch will be infusing something very American into their Budweiser brand with their latest promotion: FREEDOM! Though like all good American rights, this campaign has its limitations. Mainly, the fact that it’s relatively impossible to find out where—or when—the half-million samples will be dished out. That’s approximately 250k 6oz. and 250k 12oz. samples (which comes out to 4.5 million ounces, or 375,000 beers, if you’re keeping track).

Anheuser-Busch has pledged to distribute these samples through mid-October. And they’re launching the giveaway on Wednesday with the “Budweiser National Happy Hour”, during which everyone—particularly the thirsty, under-30 market—is encouraged to “grab some buds”. So, apparently, somewhere in America, there will be free Budweiser within our grasp. But figuring out where that is has proven to be a unique challenge.

If you hear anything let us know.

In the meantime, Budweiser is throwing a commercial, some slogans and an uninspired Facebook app at a promotion that requires an exceptional case of “right place, right time” in their target market. Frustrating? Sure, but nothing to get bent out of shape over. My suggestion: pick up some PBR. This is Nashville, people! And PBR is practically free anyway.

Editors Note: It would appear that local and state laws across the country are preventing any specifics about where you can find free beer from being released. Again, if you hear anything please let us know!

Roland White in-store at Grimey’s

3 Jul

Roland White is a legend. He’s been active in the bluegrass scene since the 60s and has played with the likes of Bill Monroe and Lester Flatt, but he might be most well known for his 13 year stint with the Nashville Bluegrass Band, of which he was a member until he broke of to form the Roland White Band in 2000.

It always impresses me when you see and older performer who still has all of his chops. Mr. White is 72 years old, still performs live, and still give mandolin lessons to willing students.

Roland is playing at Grimey’s today, Saturday July 3rd at 5:00pm (beer:30!) to celebrate the reissue of his classic 1976 album I Wasn’t Born To Rock ‘n Roll. Well, maybe he wasn’t born to rock, but he was, without a doubt, born to play some sweet bluegrass mandolin music for us. Don’t miss this event. Did I mention that there will be free beer?

Also, Grimey’s will be closed tomorrow, so today is your last chance to pick up some new tunes for the Fourth. What are some good songs to shoot off fireworks to? I used to shoot them off on a lake every summer and I always got “Smoke on the Water” stuck in my head.

Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band at Grimey’s

8 Jun

It’s going to be a hell of a week at Grimey’s. They have a TON of awesome in-stores lined up, and Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band is kicking off the week tonight at 6pm.

They’re described as bluesy roots-rock or rootsy blues-rock depending on the critic, and I don’t know about you, but that sounds pretty excellent to me.

Their new album The Wages came out recently, so I suppose they have that to celebrate.

This is one for the masses who like a good time, so come on out. Hell, there will probably even be free beer involved, so you have absolutely nothing to lose in going. Just to warn you, you might get rocked.

Weekly Highlights

18 Oct

Monday

8 off 8th at the Mercy Lounge – 9pm
This week’s 8 off 8th isn’t themed, but it’s hosted by Ryan Zumwalt. It features Jim Stapley (London rocker), Ben Deignan (soul rocker), Sage (gypsy rocker),  Jordan Hull (Dayton folker), Tesla Rossa (Anthem-y vintage Brit throwback, may or may not be experts in alternating current), Mike Manigone (you may have heard his stuff on Road Rules, Human Giant, My Super Sweet 16, and The Hills), Brother Young & Shotgun (cow punkers), Lee Harvey (high-octane country). What an…eclectic mix.

Film Screening: The Way We Get By at Vanderbilt’s Sarratt Cinema – 7pm
Presented as part of The Southern Circuit Film Tour of Independent Filmmakers.  Beginning as a seemingly idiosyncratic story about troop greeters, a group of senior citizens who gather daily at a small airport to thank American soldiers departing to and returning from Iraq, the film quickly turns into a moving, unsettling, and compassionate story about aging, loneliness, war and mortality. Reception and Q&A with filmmakers following screening.

Garth Stein reads and signs The Art of Racing in the Rain at the Green Hills Public Library – 1pm
A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life…as only a dog could tell it.
