Daniel Johnston at Lipscomb’s Alumni Auditorium

10 Feb

As Wikipedia so gently puts it, Daniel Johntson is an “American singer, songwriter, musician, and artist.”

He may not be incredibly famous, but he has the respect of countless musicians and critics, including Kurt Cobain, who brought a lot of attention to Johnston when he wore one of his shirts on TV.

But it was the 2006 documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston that has brought a lot of attention to Johnston in recent years. The film was 4 years in the making and not only features his music, but tells the story of his life from childhood and discusses his battles with mental illness.

Daniel Johnston will be speaking and performing at one of the least likely places today: Lipscomb University.

He’ll be performing at the Hutcheson Gallery Alumni Auditorium tonight at 8pm in conjunction with his solo art show.

This is going to be a great event, so do what you can to make it out.

Nevermore: An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe

19 Jan

This is a one-man play by Jeffrey Combs, who you might know him from episodes of various Star Trek franchises and from the Re-Animator, which is probably coming to the Belcourt because it looks awesome.

But I digress – Combs will be performing as Poe for the bicentennial of Poe’s birth. He’ll recite “The Raven” and other selections including The Tell-Tale Heart and Annabel Lee. This is going to be serious. No, really! Combs performed Nevermore at the Lincoln Center in NYC on Halloween, and they don’t just let any schmuck do that sort of thing. Combs even looks like Poe. He’s gotten good reviews from this, so it’s a must-see for Poe fans.

This event will take place in the main public library (the one downtown). There will be a reception with light refreshments beginning at 6:15.

Musician’s Corner at Centennial Park

5 Nov

It hurts, and it’s sad, but there comes a time when we have to say goodbye to something great – at least until next spring. Yes, this is the last week for Musicians Corner in 2011. Oh, how we’ll miss killing 3 hours on Nashville’s most beautiful Saturdays in Centennial Park, listening to great music, eating food from food trucks, looking at adorable dogs, and meeting new people.

The good news is, this week Musicians Corner has a lineup that’s even more excellent than usual. It’s presented by our friends at Lightning 100 and their Local Lightning Spotlight and will feature Madi Diaz, Holly Maher, Jessica Campbell, The Vespers, Painted Desert, and more. I highly recommend Madi Diaz. I saw her at Soundland and she was fantastic.

As always, the event runs from 3-6pm in Centennial Park and there will be fun stuff for your kids to do, food trucks, a dog of the day contest, and more. C’mon guys, they weather is going to be great for it. It’s going to be in the 60s and sunny today. And while we don’t know how many more nice weekends like this we’ll have we do know that this is the last weekend for the rest of the year that we’ll be able to spend it with Musicians Corner, so come on out and show your support to this excellent organization.

Film Forward: Free Movies at the Belcourt and Beyond

8 Apr

There are lots of reasons to love the Belcourt. There are so few theaters like it in the world – theaters that show new independent movies as well as older films, theaters that have awesome community events and in general try to bring really cool things to the community. I have to say, there would be a huge hole in Nashville’s culture without the Belcourt.

The Belcourt’s newest cool film series is even better than most because this one is absolutely free. It’s called Film Forward, and the Belcourt is apparently one of only a few theaters in the world that has it. It’s “a cultural exchange program designed to enhance cross-cultural understanding, collaboration and dialogue around the globe by engaging audiences through the exhibition of film and conversation with the filmmakers” that’s brought to us by the fine folks at the Sundance Film Festival, so you know it’s going to have some top-notch films.

You can find a list of the films that are screening as well as their times at Nashvillest. You can also find it on the Belcourt’s website, but in my opinion it’s a little easier to figure out on Nashvillest (because they are so awesome).

The only bummer is that a lot of these films are showing at noon on weekdays, which I’m sure won’t work for a lot of schedules, at least not mine. If you can attend those screenings then I’m jealous of you lucky folks with awesome schedules. Of course, that means you’re either a student, unemployed, or work really late. Enjoy your free movies dudes.

Bobby Bare Jr. and Family at Grimey’s

18 Nov

A few months ago Nashville’s favorite father/son duo, Bobby Bare Jr. and Bobby Bare Sr. produced Twistable Turnable Man: a musical tribute to the songs of Shel Silverstein.

The Bobby Bares were close friends with Shel Silverstein, who died on May 10th, 1999. While most of you probably know him for his excellent children’s poetry you might not have known that he was a successful and incredibly talented songwriter. If nothing else you probably have heard his songs “Boy Named Sue” and “Cover of the Rolling Stone.”

Twistable Turnable Man is, as you might judge from the rest of the title, is a tribute to Silverstein’s songs, performed not just by Bobby Bare, but by My Morning Jacket, Andrew Bird, Dr. Dog, Lucinda Williams, John Prine, and others.

This Saturday, November 20th at 4pm, Grimey’s is hosting Bobby Bare Jr. and family (I think that “family” is his father and daughter) for a celebration of the album and of Shel’s songs. It’s a kid-friendly event, so there will be juice for the kids and adult beverages for those of age. If you’re of age and would prefer the juice then I’m sure that would be okay as well. Hey, if there are two things you’re never too old for its juice and Shel Silverstein. It’s sure to be a great event, so don’t miss it!

Red Bull Chariot Race – Let the Hilarity Begin!

10 Nov

If there’s one thing Red Bull knows, it’s partying (all about the wings, baby). Seriously, if you mention the all-natural, gummy-bear-tasting drink to any average Joe college student, they will likely return with three things: Jagerbombs, Red Bull girls and Flugtag. Sounds like a party to me.

Side note: speaking of Jagerbombs, have you ever heard of a Jagertrain? It’s basically like dominos with alcohol; Wikipedia’s got a diagram—wicked.

Well, Red Bull has been rocking Nashville for a while, but they’re bringing the party in a new way tomorrow with a good ole’ fashioned Red Bull Chariot Race! Like Flugtag without water or flight, this race debuted in Athens, GA last year, and its second coming brings it to the true Athens of the South—sorry, losers, you can’t compete with the Parthenon…

From the press release:

Each team is limited to three members and they must maneuver their man-powered chariot (no horses here) through the designated course in front of the Parthenon at Centennial Park. Teams will race head to head in a bracket format competition with the top teams advancing to the finals. Speed is important, but style counts! Each team will perform a short skit to woo the crowd prior to the start.

Get ready for some vicious healthy rivalry, because teams representing Vanderbilt, TSU, Belmont, Lipscomb and MTSU will compete for bragging rights and…well, pretty much just bragging rights, actually. Awards will be given to the teams with the fastest chariot, the most inventive design, the greatest enthusiasm and, finally, the People’s Choice. Considering that a certain majority of these participants were likely intoxicated when they decided to enter the race, and probably during the design and construction of their racing vehicles, it should be a good show. If that doesn’t incentivize you to come out, I don’t know what will.

So, if you want plenty of hysterical designs, unforgettable moments and maybe some free swag, check out the Red Bull Chariot Race tomorrow in Centennial Park. Chariot display and voting begins at 7pm; the races start at 8pm.

Also, WRVU will be there with petitions to save their broadcast signal, Radio Free Nashville will have a booth, you’ll be able to enjoy the wonders of Yazoo Brew and Mitchell’s Deli, Bluegrass Underground, Next Big Nashville, I can’t even list it all, just know that there’s going to be a lot of stuff going on.

Oh yeah, and there will be contests. You can win prize packs for and tickets to see shows by both Yo Gabba Gabba at TPAC and Kim Richey, a personal hometown hero at the Belcourt.
