8 off 8th East Nashville Underground Preview Party at the High Watt – 8pm, 21+

This 8 off 8th will feature performances by The Gills, The Future, Bear Cub, Brandon Jazz & His Armed Forces, Frances & the Foundation, Blackfoot Gypsies, The Black Shakes and Kiernan McMullan.

Garrett Family Garden and Public Art Dedication at the Goodlettsville Library – 10am

Mayor Karl Dean will dedicate the garden that was made possible by a generous donation from the Garrett Family. It features mosaic and engraved artwork Seasons from a Bird’s Eye View by artists Dan Goostree and Paige Easter. The garden also features a seating area, performance stage, & sidewalks in addition to the lush landscaping. LIght refreshments will be served.

Jacklyn North & The Band at Two Old Hippies – 6pm

The music Jaclyn North writes and loves to perform has been described as a smooth blend of southern rock and traditional country, with a sultry kiss of blues. Chuck McKinley of KKUS in Tyler, TX described Jaclyn’s style as a “controlled, reckless abandonment.”

Beach House and Best Coast Listening Party at Grimey’s – 6pm

It’s a indie beach music party! There will be goodies and prizes and art prints and 7 inches with record purchase, and other crazy stuff like an autographed Best Coast poster and glow-in-the-dark Beach House vinyl and a Sub Pop swag bag.

8 off 8th features 15 minute sets by local bands. This week’s show will feature performances by Billy Swayze, The Grayces
Lulu Mae, I am Sabot, Paper, Buffalo Rodeo, Hot Mess, and Paper Lantern.

The Glass Harp featuring Phil Keaggy at Two Old Hippies – 6pm
According to their bio, they’re a power rock trio from Youngstown Ohio that formed in the late 60s/early 70s and their songs “stretch beyond the confines of standard form” including guitar, bass, flute, and drum solos.

JT Daly In-Story at Grimey’s – 6pm 
JT Daly is the singer for Paper Route. While they were recording new music as a group, JT was recording music for his new solo album, Memory. Join him and the folks at Grimey’s as he debuts his new music.

ARTini: American Art from the Phillips Collection – 12pm
Join Anne Taylor, curator for interpretation at the Frist Center, will lead an informal conversation about some of the works included in the exhibition To See as Artists See: American Art from The Phillips Collection.

Onward Southern Soldiers: Religion and the Army of Tennessee in the Civil War at the Public Library’s Metro Archives – 2:30pm
First Tuesday at the Archives: Using primary source material such as diaries, letters, journals and sermons of the Army of Tennessee, Traci Nichols-Belt, along with Gordon T. Belt, presents the history of the vital role of the army’s religious practices. Located at 3801 Green Hills Village Dr.

Understanding Your Body’s Nutritional Needs at the Green Hills Library – 6pm
One of the easiest ways to stay healthy is to know your body’s needs. This little workshop will help you figure that out.

Old Time Jam at the 5 Spot – 7:30pm
East Nashville’s Wednesday Night Old Time Jam provides enthusiasts of traditional, acoustic-based roots music the opportunity to regularly meet, share tunes, dance, swap stories, and bond together in general camaraderie.

Nightcap Series at Blair School of Music – 8pm
An evening of contemporary horn trios, spotlighting works by composers Paul Lansky and Verne Reynolds. Lansky made his reputation as a pioneer in electronic and computer music (Radiohead featured samples of his work prominently on signature album Kid A), but has more recently been writing for acoustic instruments. Reynoldswas a distinguished composer and influential horn professor who wrote extensively for brass instruments. This event will be recorded live for later broadcast on WNPT-2 television and VUcast.

They boast “raw passion, raw nerves, raw power, and ultimately raw talent” in their artist bio. Think bluesy bluegrass with some rock.

This week’s 8 off 8th will feature performances by Serotonin, Imaginary Baseball League, Daphne’s Operation, Snakeskin Machinegun, Java Christ, Jetpack, The Lonely Hearts, and Tommy and the Whale.

Quilt in-store at Grimey’s – 6pm
From the Grimey’s description: Boston band Quilt weave a tapestry of float-away guitar sounds with Eastern melodies and languid, intimate vocals, laying out a modern take on psychedelic folk.

Kenny Vaughan and Friends at 12 South Taproom – 9:30pm
Kenny has played with such artists as Lucinda Williams, Rodney Crowell and others and is currently a full-time member of Marty Stuart’s band. He was also named instrumentalist of the year by the Americana Music Association in 2006.

Yay Zumba! Get your fit on. This class is free and open to the community as part of Thrive, the YMCA’s Healthy Living Challenge.

Presidential Lectures in Art and Art History: Nick Cave at Lipscomb’s Ezell Center – 7pm
Nick Cave the visual artist, not the musician. Still cool.

8 off 8th at the High Watt – 9pm, 21+
Yep, you read that right, 8 off 8th will be at the High Watt, the new venue attached to Mercy Lounge, this week. Performers will include Hot Mess, The Joy of Painting, Dogs of OZ, Echo Group, The Gills, Phantom Farmer, Robert Chisolm, and Josh Foster.

Signature Series: Blair Brass Quintet at Blair’s Ingram Hall – 8pm
The Blair Brass Quintet, founded in 1995, has concertized throughout the Southeast, and is very involved in exposing young people to their music through school concerts. Their repertoire ranges from traditional to contemporary. For this concert, the Quintet will perform works by Samuel Scheidt, John Cheetham, Malcolm Arnold and Charles-Marie Widor, among others.

Tuba Fools’ Day at Austin Peay’s Concert Hall – 7:30pm
Come on, how could I NOT shout-out this event. Tubas!

Featuring a composition by Cory Winters and soloist Daniel Bolick, Travis Patton, Alan Puglisi, Ryan Traub and Amanda Walden with the University Orchestra.

Film Screening: The Hedgehog at Vanderbilt’s Sarratt Cinema – 7:30pm
Inspired by The New York Times best seller, The Elegance of the Hedgehog, by Muriel Barbery. The timely story of Paloma, a young girl bent on ending it all on her upcoming twelfth birthday. Using her father’s old camcorder to chronicle the hypocrisy she sees in adults, her unlikely friendship with a grumpy concierge helps her to come of age in a different light. French with English subtitles. Not rated. 100 mins.

Pat Bergeson, Charles Treadway, and Charles Walker at 12 South Taproom – 9:30pm
One of the best B3 organists, one of the best soul singers,  and one of the best guitarists in Nashville in one room? You better believe it. It’s going to be a great set of music.

Film Screening: Pardon at Vanderbilt’s Sarratt Cinema – 7:30pm
Based on a true event, the tragicomic story of three friends who end up in prison when they are mistaken as members of a terrorist organization. In prison, they remember the families and lovers they left behind. Turkish with English subtitles. Not rated.

Author Event: Robin O’Bryant at Parnassus Books – 6:30pm
Join humor columnist and author Robin O’Bryant as she discusses her book, Ketchup Is A Vegetable And Other Lies Moms Tell Themselves.

Vanderbilt Divinity School’s Antoinette Brown Lecture at Vandy’s Benton Chapel – 7pm
Amy Hollywood’s talk is titled “Love Abyss: Preaching Desire in the 13th and 21st Centuries.” Hollywood, who is the Elizabeth H. Monrad Professor of Christian Studies at Harvard, specializes in mysticism, with strong interests in feminist theory, psychoanalysis and continental philosophy.

Vanderbilt University Berry Lecture: Can Bad People Live Well at Vandy’s Furman Hall – 7:30pm
Marilyn Friedman, the W. Alton Jones Professor of Philosophy at Vanderbilt University, will deliver the last of four 2012 Berry Lectures in Public Philosophy. Her talk is titled “Can Bad People Live Well?” The Berry Lectures aim to make philosophy accessible and relevant for the public. Friedman will address the fact that bad people, those who harm others seriously and often, sometimes manage to live good lives. This talk explores a variety of ways to come to grips with this disturbing observation.

Pond In-Store at Grimey’s – 6pm
Pond hails from West Australia and features three members of Tame. According to Grimey’s, Pond’s sound is a “woozy, distorted take” on the “heavy, psychedelic rock” of Tame. They’re just stopping by Nashville on a day off, so this is the only chance you’ll have to see them.

Bobby Keys Band Showcase at the Mercy Lounge – 9pm
It’s not every day that rock’n’roll royalty plays a free show at the Mercy Lounge. Bobby Keys’ name may not be familiar to you, but he’s played saxophone on albums by The Who, Harry Nilsson, The Rolling Stones, and more. He actually played the sax solo on “Brown Sugar” and you might remember that famous film scene of he and Keith Richards throwing a TV out of a hotel room window during their 1972 American tour.

Rick Steves: Travel as a Political Act at Vanderbilt Student Life Center Ballroom – 7pm
Before the Travel Channel and the Internet helping you plan trips overseas there was Rick Steves. The man has spends months every year abroad for 30 years, and tonight he’s coming to Vanderbilt to talk about how the other 96 percent of humanity (people not in the USA) sees our nation and explores how his social activism has grown naturally out of his travel experiences. Tickets are required and are available in the Sarratt Center Box Office.

8 bands, 15 minute sets, a night of local music and drink specials. Oh, and only Thin Lizzy songs.

Nashville Wind Ensemble at Lipscomb’s Collins Auditorium – 7:30pm
The Nashville Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Stephen Rhodes will open their spring season with a program featuring both classical and contemporary works for the wind band.

Motown Monday at Two Old Hippies –  6pm
Motown makes Mondays more manageable.

Tuesday

Jim White In-Store at Grimey’s – 6pm
Jim White is a described by Grimey’s as a “zen master” and a “lyrical genius” who “distills life into a few phrases that can floor you with pithy insights.” I can personally attest to the fact that he is very good. His new album Where it Hits You is out now and he’s playing a few record stores on his way to SXSW! Free and all-ages, as always.
