Pints and Pistons at Imogene and Willie

26 Apr

Pints + Pistons is a motorcycle rally presented by Imogene + Willie. Being based out of an old gas station, and being totally rad, it seems to make perfect sense that they would have an appreciation for the most bad ass, greasy mode of transportation.

Those with motorcycles should meet at the shop at 1pm for a ride across Middle Tennessee. It’s extensive. It’s awesome. You might want to fill up before you head out.

Just be sure to be back by 5pm. That’s also when you’ll want to head over to i+w if you just want to check out all the awesome bikes (because you don’t have one of your own but really wish you did.) That’s because 5pm is when the free beer happens.

Enjoy, and rev-on.

Record Store Day 2012

19 Apr

Record Store Day is one of the most wonderful days of the year. Exclusive releases, massive sales at the record stores, free live performances, it’s such a wonderful day. Here’s a low-down of happenings at some of Nashville’s record stores.

Grimey’s

RSD at Grimey’s is hard to beat. There will be a massive outdoor parking lot sale with $1 CDs and vinyl, a sale on all new goods in the store, food from Mas Tacos, beer from Yazoo, and tons of live bands. There will even be a few films screening in The Basement! My tip – bring cash for the outdoor sale. It’ll save a ton of time for yourself and everyone around you. and bring a milk or mail crate if you have one.

Here’s the live band schedule: 11:30 – djb (dj set)

12:00 - Langhorne Slim
12:30 – Best of Bread (dj set)
1:00 - The Grenadines

7:00 - Kansas Bible Company

And here’s the film schedule:

2:45 - Andrew Bird FEVER YEAR (a feature length concert documentary film)
4:30 - Brick And Mortar And Love (a documentary film about indie record stores with some footage shot at Grimey’s from last year’s Record Store Day).

The Groove

Like Grimey’s, The Groove will be having a big outdoor blast with bands, a big sale, and more. There will be a bunch of records and CDs priced at $1 or less and everything non-RSD specific will be 15% off all day long.

An evening with Algonquin Books and author Robert Goolrick

15 Mar

Parnassus Books is doing a fantastic job stepping up to fill in the massive hole that formed with the end of Davis-Kidd, especially in the events department. They’ve brought some great national and local artists to their store to speak about and sign their books. and tonight they not only bring another, they bring swag and more from Algonquin Books.

Tonight from 6-8pm at Parnassus, Algonquin Books will be there with complimentary titles, free tote bags, wine, and a chance to win $150 in Algonquin titles of your choice.

On top of all that, Robert Goolrick, the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller, A Reliable Wife, will be there too!

Basically, this is a must-attend event for book lovers. Save some swag for me!

The Great Escape Indoor Sidewalk Sale

13 Mar

The Great Escape has spent a good part of this year celebrating their 35th anniversary (like with their 50 cent LP sale) and they’re continuing that celebration with an even bigger sale.

They’re calling it the Indoor Sidewalk Sale. It’ll take place this Saturday (St. Patrick’s Day) and all day long there will be tons of items on being sold for 5 cents to one dollar. A whole big room filled with nothing that costs more than a dollar!

Before you scoff and think to yourself “it’s just going to be a bunch of junk anyway” let me tell you that you’d be wrong. At the 50 cent LP sale we found a lot of great music – we even found an original pressing of a super-rare Stevie Wonder record! It’s the rule of huge record sales: the digger will be rewarded.

Here’s the low-down on the pricing for Saturday:

  • 10¢ Vinyl Records (LPs, 45s & 78s)
  • $1 DVDs
  • 25¢ VHS Tapes
  • 50¢ CDs
  • $1 Comic Books (Regularly priced at $2.99-$9.99)
  • $1 Trade Paperbacks
  • Magic & Sports Cards 100-For-$1 (Grab Bags)
  • $1 Toys
  • 50¢ Posters
  • 5¢ Books
  • 5¢ Magazines

The store will be open from 10am-9pm. This sale applies to the Charlotte Avenue location only.

Happy digging!

Half-off Tickets to the Nashville Symphony

5 Mar

The Nashville Symphony is a great community resource. Not all cities are as lucky as we are to have such amazing concerts from classical to international folk ballet to pop stars grace their symphony stages. The only problem is this: sometimes it’s just a little too expensive.

But luck would have it, the Nashville Symphony is experiencing a little bit of March Madness. They’ve discounted floor seats at Russian Masters (this week) and Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody to $35 and are offering 50% off all tickets to Tao: the Art of the Drum, Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Steven Wright (the comedian), and The Cleveland Orchestra.

The sale is for one week only, so you better get buying. Just make sure you use the promotional code MADNESS at check-out.

Thanks, Nashville Symphony!

The Great Escape One Dollar CD Blowout Sale

17 Feb

If you didn’t already know that The Great Escape is one of the best places in Nashville to get inexpensive CDs, DVDs, vinyl records, comic books, and more, then I feel terrible for all the money you haven’t saved. But I’m here to enlighten you to the cheap side, so I’m going to do my job and let you know that this Saturday, the 18th, The Great Escape is having a HUGE blowout sale where many of their CDs will be priced at a hard-to-beat ONE DOLLAR.

Details are slim, but expect to be doing some digging at The Great Escape’s Charlotte location this weekend. According to their email they’ll have thousands and thousands of CDs for sale, including brand new stuff that just never made it onto the racks, warehouse stuff, and CDs that are normally priced up to $8.99. I’d suggest getting there early, because you know what they say – the early bird gets all of those advanced copies of Merge and Beggars releases that he or she has always been meaning to buy but just hasn’t. Also, come back during the day, because they’ll keep restocking throughout the day.

The store opens at 10am and the sale lasts all day.

Happy digging!

Buy One, Get One Burrito (or whichever menu item pleases you)

14 Feb

In the world of burrito popularity Chipotle is obviously the most popular. I do love some Chipotle, but one brand that doesn’t get enough attention is Qdoba. Qdoba doesn’t just have excellent burritos, they also very fantastic queso and superb tortilla soup. And they want to share their food with you and someone you’re willing to kiss in public for half-off on Valentine’s Day.

Tomorrow all you have to do is stop into a Qdoba with a boyfriend, girlfriend, close friend who also wants cheap food, or an understanding stranger and you’ll get buy-one-get-one-free entrees!

I recommend the tortilla soup, but you can get more information and read the whole menu here.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Meet ‘n 3 at the Farmer’s Market

3 Feb

Nashville has a new love: food trucks. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – we just go NUTS for food trucks. Thankfully, a plethora of organizations and sponsors (Lightning 100, in this case) want to give us the food trucks we crave all the damn time.

That’s where Meet ‘n 3 comes in. The event brings together four things Nashville loves: local artists, local music, local food trucks, and the Nashville Farmers’ Market! It’ll take place tonight at the Farmers’ Market from 6-9pm, but if you actually want food from a food truck I highly recommend you get there early.

The participating food trucks include Riffs Fine Street Food, The Grilled Cheeserie, Hoss’ Loaded Burgers, Smoke Et Al, Yayo’s OMG, Jonbalaya Catering, Love Shack, Blackbird Heritage, Wrapper’s Delight, and The Latin Wagon.

There will also be twenty local artists and crafters selling handcrafted jewelry, fine art, photography, sculptural objects and more.
