Karen Elson In-Store at Grimey’s this Wednesday

I would venture to say that most of the people in the world know Karen Elson as little more than Jack White’s wife. Unless you live around Belmont, in which case you know her as the person who owns Venus and Mars.

Well I’m about to turn your one dimensional view of Karen Elson on its head. She’s also a singer-songwriter, and a freaking good one at that.

Elson was recently signed to XL Recordings, which is one of my favorite record labels for a number of reasons. They have a great history of releasing awesome music, and this is no different. Her album, The Ghost Who Walks is being released this Tuesday and was produced by Jack White (who else?).

I’ve listened to the few songs that are streaming on her MySpace and I really dig it. By now you know that I’m not good at describing music, but her stuff just sounds cool. I much prefer it to anything Jack White has done. It reminds me a little of Mazzy Star and PJ Harvey. This isn’t just a musician’s wife milking her husband’s fame for what it’s worth. Karen Elson has the talent to back it up.

She’ll be playing a free in-store at Grimey’s this Wednesday, May 26th at 6pm. Go there.
