Weekly Highlights – Week of Dec 28

Things are still a little slow going into the new year, but here’s what I found.

Monday

8 off 8th at the Mercy Lounge – 9pm
Even though it’s Sunday the Mercy Lounge still hasn’t posted all 8 acts, but so far they have The Armed Forces, Natural Child, Majestico, The Billy Goats, and Powerbrrrd  listed. The rest will just be a jolly old surprise then. Quick question: do The Billy Goats ever play shows that aren’t free?

Kristen Cothron with Lilly Hiatt and The Grayces at 12th and Porter – 7pm
Kristen Cothron with Lilly Hiatt and The Grayces live at 12th and Porter! Yeah, it’s pretty self-explanatory.

Grimey’s Birthday Celebration at The Basement – 8pm
In case you haven’t heard, Grimey’s is 10 years old this month. You might have already attended the Birthday/Christmas party, but that was from Grimey’s The Store. What about Grimey, the man? Mike Grimes, co-owner/founder of our favorite record store, is celebrating a birthday of his own at The Basement, the lower level of that rock & roll complex on 8th Avenue. We don’t know who’s playing, but perhaps Guilty Pleasures (a band headed up by Grimes) needs a little practice before their New Years Bash at Cannery? In any case,  it’s probably worth attending even if you don’t know who’s taking the stage. Happy birthday, Grimey!

Tuesday

New Faces Nite at the Basement – 8pm
I feel like I haven’t mentioned this event in awhile. I’m sorry to tell you that the bands tonight are yet another group of mysterious TBA folks. What the hell? I guess it’s hard to pin down bands this time of year with all of the college kids gone.

Wednesday

Door Hanger Designs at the Downtown Public Library – 10am-12:30pm
Design your own door hanger-y things. I hope all of you parents with bored kids at home for winter break are paying attention. I mean, you can only take them to so many movies.

Thursday

Music City NYE Bash on Broadway – 7:30pm-2010
This is the Nashville version on the NYC celebration. There will be free music, minor celebs, Rodney Atkins, fireworks, and a guitar drop (instead of a ball drop, get it? Get it?). Expect us to write more on this later.

Friday

Nothing, sorry. Take the day to recover from last night’s fun.

Saturday

Weekend Jimmy and the Easy Party at the Mercy Lounge – 9pm
There will be lots of drinking and lots of your favorite songs from the past 50 years. Not a bad way to bring in the new year. I’m not even going to mention the stage names of the guys in this band.

First Saturday Art Crawl – 6-9pm
As usual, it’s the first Saturday Art Crawl. All or a lot of the art galleries in Nashville are open and will have light refreshments available. This is perfect if your new year’s resolution is to get cultured.

Resolution Day Hike with Team Green – 1pm
If you’re like most people your new year’s resolution is to get into shape, get healthy, etc. Kick it off to a good start with Team Green. They’ll hike a leisurely 4.5 miles along the Mossy Ridge Trail at Percy Warner Park. Dress warm, wear good hiking boots, and bring plenty of hydration and snacks.
