So, this is my first blog post for Nashville for Free, even though I’ve been doing newsletters for the facebook group for over a year now. This can’t be any different, right?
We have a pretty big holiday coming up, and I thought I’d do my best to get all of you wonderful people aquainted with some of the cool free things you can do. It’s America’s birthday, and like any birthday party we’re expecting some party favors. Let’s start with a cool event on Friday before we get down to business with the hottest festival in Nashville…
Friday nights at Gaylord Opryland Resort have become everyone’s favorite weekly pool party. Each week features a different band, and this week Autovaughn is going to teach us how to rock. The fun is free, and so is the parking (in selected lots). All ages are welcome!
DATE: July 3rd
TIME: Party starts at 6pm, show starts at 7pm
WHERE: Cascades pool at Gaylord Opryland
2009 Music City Hot Chicken Festival.
I’m ashamed to say that I’ve never gotten around to trying hot chicken, but my best friend did, and I got to hear allll about it. Let’s just say he went to Prince’s and decided to try hot on his first try and leave it at that.
This festival might get me to try hot chicken, though, because it starts at 11am, and the first 5oo (yes, 500) people there get a sampler plate from places like Prince’s, Bolton’s, and the Chicken Shack. If you’re not one of the first 500 that’s okay, because you can hang out, listen to some live music, and buy some Yazoo beer and hot chicken until 3pm. God bless the USA.
DATE: July 4th
WHERE: East Park (700 Woodland Street)

Summer Grill Party at Nashville Farmers’ Market
Nashville’s Farmers’ Market is having an awesome free grill party on the 4th (just as the name would imply). You’ll be able to listen to some sweet free music, sample grilled veggies, and learn more about grilling while supporting local agriculture and artisans.
Music City July 4th: Let Freedom Sing!
I guess that this could be called the “big event” this fourth of July. It’s a big ‘ol festival in Riverfront Park, complete with live music and the South’s largest fireworks display. Awww yeah, this is gonna be off the hook, for real. Here’s a little breakdown of what’s going on:
12:00 – the free family fun begins! Inflatable stuff! Other stuff that isn’t specified!
2:00 – small stage entertainment kicks off with MTA’s “Transit” (I have no idea…)
3:00 – Frankie Ballard
4:00 – The Grascals
5:00 – Lee Roy Parnell
6:34 – Main stage entertainment begins with the Nashville Symphony and the Fisk Jubilee Singers performing the national anthem. Other notable performers include the Gabe Dixon Band, Barry Scott, and WYNONNA FREAKING JUDD!
9:03 – this is approx. when the fireworks will begin with the Nashville Symphony playing in the background. That sounds pretty majestic.
9:25 – fireworks end, you go home or find another party to go to, such as the next event…
DATE: July 4th

Mercy Lounge 4th of July Party
Before you men out there get excited, this is only free for the ladies (it’s good to be a woman). You dudes will have to pay $5 or $8, depending on which of the two prices on the Mercy Lounge website is right.
I’ve heard that the Mercy Lounge knows how to do a party, and this shouldn’t be any different. Apparently it’s a dance party, and here’s a list of the entertainers who will entertain your socks off:
Enjoy the Zoo
Biscuits and Gravy
& special guest MC, Big Fella
Oh yeah, and apparently the view of the downtown fireworks from the Mercy Lounge is awesome, so you don’t really have any reason not to go, do you?
